Welcome to Academy Prep
So you want to go to the Academy. Well, there's going to be a great deal you need to do to prepare. Your top priority is to ensure you're physically prepared for the intensive training you are about to embark on. Hopefully you've already been training.
But, needless to say if you have or have not been training. Right now is the time to get ready!
The First Rule
Rule #1:
Never show up at the Academy in poor physical condition!
Why You Must Be Physically Prepared...
Without proper preparation, you'll be asking for problems:
- You'll run the risk of injury.
- You will quickly fall behind.
- You'll lose self-confidence.
The Academy is intense!
You will be expected to keep up and improve quickly. The best thing you can do is arrive in top physical condition!
Your Academy Experience
Your days at the Academy will be very long and intense.
Generally, you will stay overnight and dorm at the Academy -- although it's possible you might attend a Day Academy and go home each night.
Either way, PREPARATION is the absolute key to your success at the Academy.
Intensity... Every Single Day
You already know, by now, that firefighting is like no other career. It is, in fact, a lifestyle. And, that's exactly WHY the training is so INTENSE. After all, as a firefighter, people's lives are at stake -- including YOUR OWN.
There will be morning workouts lasting 60 to 90 minutes. There will be drills and evolutions. You'll be tested academically.
From the moment you enter the Academy, you will be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally.
Academy Expectations
You can expect to run between 3 to 15 miles per week (1 to 3 miles per day).
From 50 pushups the first day to 200 pushups by graduation.
You can expect hundreds of sit-ups, planks, pull-ups, dips, squats and circuit training!
You'll be tested on rules and regulations, training manual instruction and SOPs.
You'll be expected to score a minimum % on all written exams.
You'll be expected to physically and mentally to accomplish all challenges presented to you.
You'll be expected to maintain peak conditioning through rest, nutrition and reflection.
Your degree of success will be directly dependent upon the time and effort YOU put into preparation.
In addition to those expectations, your Academy trainers will intentionally induce stressful situations to help you better understand the demands of firefighting, and train you to mentally and emotionally handle work-related stressors.
Mental toughness is a character trait of a successful recruit.

Mike Collins, Firefighter
"Steve mentally and physically trains his cadets to be the strongest version of ourselves so come time to be on our own we're prepared to fight anything thrown at us."
Rob Wattsman, Cohoes Fire Dept.
"Nunno doesn’t give up. You can’t quit as a firefighter and Nunno won’t quit on you. Thank you Nunno for not quitting on us. This is the best job in the world. Be firefit!"
